2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To quantify this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's elevated place in the broader culture is also visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the trend in gaming seems particularly powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
