The Gunners' boss has expressed confidence that his squad can persist in handling with fitness issues after disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The German forward has been sidelined since August due to an operation on his knee. Hoped to return earlier in December, the manager stated the player hit a snag when advancing his training and could not progress “to the next level.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This news leaves a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role last weekend, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who came back off the bench as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also an option after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Additional concerns involve centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in central defence for the table-toppers.

Arteta believes the significant outlay on new players ahead of this season has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to deal with such unavailability.

Questioned if more options was benefiting their title quest, his response was positive. “Absolutely, as this campaign has seen more issues in some areas, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he continued.

“History has shown us that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we are to fight at the highest level. And the example of Mikel Merino.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Speaking about the delay previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “He was doing everything. He failed to advance to the required step and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

He shared his personal desire to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. I mean, he is a footballer who, in my view, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”
