MHA Voice Actors Look Back on an Emotional Last Chapter: 'I am Kind of a Weepy Mess'
The beloved anime series My Hero Academia has reached its conclusion, leaving viewers with a deep feeling of sentimentality that goes deeper than the story itself. This superhero saga has always been greater than a simple story; it's a rite-of-passage story about hope, resilience, and the true meaning of heroism in a challenging world. The eighth season pushes these central ideas to their breaking point, as the students of U.A. High faces the aftermath of the villainous uprising and a society on the edge of collapse.
For a generation of viewers, the series, which began in 2015, was their introduction to anime. From its explosive debut to its emotional ending, it defined the genre for nearly a decade. Its end truly marks the end of a chapter. If you discover you are getting misty-eyed during the final episodes, know that you are in plenty of company. The voice actors felt those exact emotions, pouring immense heart into their recordings for the closing seasons.
Saying Farewell to a Defining Chapter
"Itâs been such a magical thing to see this last installment weave together all these story threads into this massive, heartfelt release for these characters," stated one actor. "And to be part of that, in that moment, portraying the characters, is truly moving."
The challenge of the farewell isn't solely due to the storyline. My Hero Academia became a major part in the careers of its performers, and with its end comes the closing of an period they have carried with them for a long time.
"Just as a person, for whom this has been part of life for the better part of a decade, even if the line I'm saying isnât particularly emotional, if itâs just Ida being himself, every time I wrap recording, Iâm kind of a blubbering wreck because it's ending. Iâm not ready," admitted another seasoned performer.
Unexpected Tears from the Last Season
Despite portraying their own iconic roles, several cast members still have personal favorite characters outside their own, figures whose story arcs hit them just as hard on an personal level.
"The thing thatâs surprised me so far in my viewing of the final season is how numerous characters are making me cry," said one actor. "Be it the Symbol of Peace's battle at the very start of this season, the Erasure Hero, [even] Aoyama drew a tear this season!"
The actors behind the brotherly hero-and-villain duo were also caught up in the tragedy of their complex relationship, particularly during the brothersâ confrontations across the recent seasons.
A Simple Question
"Recently, a fellow actor delivered a line as his character that, honestly, if you took it out of context, itâs a nothingburger, it shouldn't affect anyone, but he asks his brother a inquiry, and the way it was delivered was so real and beautiful," recalled one actor. "It influenced the performance I gave. I adore my colleagues, theyâre so good at this, and I cannot stress enough that Iâm so fortunate."
Another actor echoed the sentiment, explaining that the apparently minor question originates from a brief, funny scene shown earlier, one that is completed in the ending and lands with devastating emotional weight.
"Jump ahead to the final season, when theyâre meeting, and [the character] says, 'Wait, I need more time'," the actor explained. "Yes, it was just a way to try to connect. It was just a question, but within the story, it's everything. It's affection, understanding, remorse..."
"... and penitence," finished the other, clearly moved. "Those boys shouldâve been able to talk like that."
