New York Unveils Portal for Citizens to Submit ICE Videos Following Arrests of Four American Citizens
The state AG has rolled out a fresh online portal encouraging locals to submit visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This move comes just a day after a significant enforcement action disrupted NYC's Chinatown, triggering widespread outcry.
American Citizens Held In ICE Operation
A lawmaker revealed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were taken into custody and detained for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Rallies occurred in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"All New York residents has the right to reside free from terror," the AG wrote in a statement.
"For those who saw and documented federal operations recently, I encourage you to provide that material with us. We are pledged to assessing these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."
Submission Process
The form provides spaces to upload visual evidence of the raid, plus a section to indicate location information. When submitting, individuals must check a option that states that "the office might employ any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."
Information about the ICE Action
The enforcement action, which onlookers say involved dozens of federal agents, occurred in a popular neighborhood of NYC where imitation products and other goods are regularly available in large quantities – frequently to tourists.
Videos of the operation depict multiple hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and pushing back onlookers. Throngs of locals trailed the personnel down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was noticed rolling through the city streets.
Official Reactions
During a news conference held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, said that four US citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the individuals were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," he said. "This is a military-style operation to incite tension. It is simply a excuse to incite violence for this administration to bring in the armed forces to prevent unrest that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Anger over the federal action quickly spread – every mayoral candidates denounced the incident, along with the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, rather than security. It needs to cease," a political candidate declared.
The city's community groups expressed outrage too.
"Immigration agents descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, hooded officers and tactical gear to go after street vendors working to survive. This operation had no connection to community security and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," said the leader of a advocacy group.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has stated it will not apprehend citizens. However, investigative journalism has found that more than 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents during the period of the current administration.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in the state and nationwide recently.
An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous along with accusations of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a submission provided by civil rights groups stated inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
