Premier League Headlines: Hannibal Banned for Spitting; Guardiola Says 'Back Line Must Get Better'
From the world of English football updates, a significant midfielder was handed a lengthy suspension, a head coach has pointed to a defender's mistakes to prove an argument, and Pep Guardiola has demanded defensive betterment after a chaotic victory.
1. Mejbri Issued Four-Game Ban and Fine
Burnley's player Hannibal Mejbri has been issued a four-game ban and a ÂŁ15,000 penalty following improper behaviour in October's fixture versus Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player was referred a separate regulatory commission following allegations where he spat in the direction of visiting supporters around the 67-minute mark of a 2-0 victory for Burnley.
A statement said: “An independent disciplinary panel has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to misconduct in the top-flight match with Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that the player acted in breach of the laws of football and/or in a poor way and/or using abusive and/or unacceptable conduct through spitting towards the area of Leeds United supporters.”
The statement added, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game ban and a fine following proceedings. The panel's full explanation for the sanction will be published in due course.” Burnley, currently 19th in the standings, visit 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.
2. Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Make an Argument
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of experience is not a problem at team, highlighting how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not prevent the 28-year-old from having a bad game during a 3-1 loss to Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the most youthful squad in the division, does not feel that mentality played a part in the setback. He made his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player on the pitch, who delivered an error-strewn performance in central defence.
“We always talk about experience after we fail to win,” the coach said. “When we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced personnel. I understand that if we don’t win, we are constantly searching for the reason why, but I think why we didn’t win to Leeds is not because of the experience, it’s because we just weren't at our best.”
Maresca continued, “Who was the most senior player on our team on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he good? So, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were simply not good enough.”
3. Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Has to Get Better'
Pep Guardiola has insisted the champions have taken lessons from their recent scare at Fulham and the episode has now been forgotten. City held on for a 5-4 win during a remarkable encounter on Tuesday, having led 5-1 with about 60 minutes played.
This followed they resisted a Leeds fightback and won 3-2 in the previous game, prompting further doubts about whether they are the defensive steel required to mount a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” Guardiola commented. “Good lessons, hopefully. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, you have to take onboard what happens in the good things and results and focus on the next one.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We try to understand what happened, to not concede so many goals. After conceding three by Leeds, and five goals against Fulham you can see the two sides, correct? So, always done plenty of positive things. Yet how many shots on target did Leeds ? Three? Scored two. It’s not good. How many attempts did Fulham ? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded we can see is high. We must improve.”
4. Newcastle Prioritise New Defenders' Contracts
Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed new deal negotiations with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his to-do list at St James’ Park. He arrived from Nottingham Forest recently and is reassured to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali has a deal extending until 2029 with an option until 2030.
That has left Wilson to prioritise talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement set to expire in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, Newcastle's talks have assumed some urgency.
“The initial few days in the job was when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation was much better than the one I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is no secret that the club would want to extend Tino’s contract and also wants to extend Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are ongoing.”
Manager Eddie Howe will be without Botman against the home game with Burnley this Saturday, with the defender expected to be out for at least another week.
5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start Against Brighton
West Ham manager Nuno EspĂrito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to start for they play Brighton on Sunday, having completed a ban for the sending-off he received Liverpool.
“That incident is behind us,” Nuno remarked. “I am positive it will not happen again as he personally acknowledged the error. We discussed it about it internally. I am positive the matter is closed and will not be repeated.”
Nuno also understands the significant strain on his side, who are in the relegation zone before the weekend fixtures. “We can't avoid it,” he said. “It's a reality. We must confront it. We're battling for survival. We can't hide it.”
Arteta Impressed by No 9 Stand-in Merino
Mikel Merino may keep his place as Arsenal’s centre-forward despite their regular strikers are fit again. Merino has been deployed as a makeshift number nine because of fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored Arsenal’s opener against Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for the second goal during a 2-0 win that maintained {their|
