Privacy Online is an Falsehood’: Australian Teen Indicted Regarding Reported Active Shooter False Report in the US

An adolescent from the state of NSW has been indicted following accusations he placing numerous false reports to 911 operators – a tactic referred to as “SWATting” – wrongly stating mass shootings were taking place at major retail and educational institutions throughout the America.

Global Probe Results in Charges

AFP officers formally accused the young male on 18 December. Officials state he is part of an alleged decentralised online criminal group operating from behind keyboards in order to prompt an “immediate and major emergency response”.

“Commonly young males ranging in age from 11 to 25, are involved in activities such as swatting calls, doxing and cyber attacks to earn credibility, a reputation and recognition in their digital communities.”

As part of the probe, officers took possession of several electronic devices and a banned gun found in the teen’s custody. This seizure was conducted under a joint police initiative created in late 2025.

Law Enforcement Provide a Clear Message

Graeme Marshall, issuing a warning, cautioned that people thinking they can break the law using technology and hidden personas are being targeted.

Federal authorities stated it launched its inquiry upon receiving intelligence from US federal agents.

Jason Kaplan, from the FBI's international wing, stated that the “hazardous and disruptive act” of false reports endangered lives and wasted vital emergency resources.

“This case demonstrates that anonymity online is an myth,” he commented in a joint statement alongside Australian police.

He further stated, “We are dedicated to working with international partners, our global allies, and tech companies to identify and hold accountable individuals that abuse technology to cause harm to communities.”

Legal Proceedings

The accused has been indicted on multiple counts of telecommunications offences and an additional charge of illegal possession of a prohibited firearm. The accused potentially faces up to a decade and a half in jail.

“The police's duty (is|remains) to halting the harm and anguish individuals of this online crime network are imposing on the community, under the mistaken belief they are hidden,” the official stated.

The youth was due to be presented before a NSW juvenile court on the following Tuesday.
