The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" has them relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall for good.

Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.

Like many elements in volume 2, the truth about the mine shaft incident originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is understood of his research, the briefcase most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the ultimate battle to come.
