The English Team versus The South African Squad – Women's Cricket Global Tournament Starts

Silence please! All discussions have ended, for now at least, and England’s World Cup is about to begin. The bad news is, they start with a tough game with South Africa as their first rival. The good news is, they open with a stern test opposing the Proteas. A win in this match might boost England's confidence right away and justify the cautious confidence in their build-up discussions.

Pre-Tournament Momentum

An excellent win over Australia during their final preparatory match has boosted that self-assurance, although the personal contributions by Alice Capsey (scoring 88 not out) and Sarah Glenn (5 for 32) caused a small team-selection puzzle for Charlotte Edwards.

Edwards is known for her success, meaning there is little chance of the team having modest ambitions. But from a distance they are in the slightly unusual position with a well-defined expectation for the event.

Competition Outlook

Not making the last four could be a slight surprise, despite the improvement among the traditional also-rans. Reaching the final ahead of either Australia or India, the primary frontrunners to lift the trophy, would represent a major feat. If the English side triumphs… it's best not to entertain that thought. It’s much too premature for that sort of talk.

This fixture commences at half past ten in the morning BST.
