The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to continue the legacy and commitment that the family owners has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is built upon, featuring a significant array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
