A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to playing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, surpassing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
