The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit program reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
