Trump's former lawyer resigns after court deems ineligible her service.
The ex-lawyer for the former president has resigned as the chief federal prosecutor in the state. This decision was prompted by a court battle that questioned her legal standing to serve.
Attorney General's Statement
US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, confirmed her stepping down on the start of the week. She commented that the judicial decision made it unworkable for her to perform her duties.
"But do not mistake compliance for surrender," she wrote. "My fight will now stretch across America."
Legal Background
Her resignation follows closely on a judicial panel ruled that she had been unlawfully serving as the federal prosecutor. This decision is likely to affect scores of prosecutions in New Jersey.
The court declared that a interim role that did not receive the advice and consent of the Senate ran afoul of the statute on vacant positions.
Future Role and Reaction
It was also stated that the former prosecutor will continue working within the Department of Justice as a high-level advisor. Habba plans to pursue additional appeals of the ruling, with hopes of a different outcome.
Writing online, the Attorney General contended that the court "must not second-guess the executive's selection of lawyers responsible for carrying out the fundamental role of the presidency of enforcing the law."
Record and Legacy
Bondi praised the prosecutor's work and pointed out that while she was in charge, the state capital of Newark saw a one-fifth decrease in criminal activity. It was also reported that the Camden experienced its first summer in 50 years with no murders.
Background and Previous Role
Habba, was initially recruited to Donald Trump's lawyers in 2021. She went on to acted for her client in his hush-money trial in 2024, when he was conviction on multiple felony counts of financial record manipulation.
Prior to Habba took on the role of US Attorney, Donald Trump had stated he was appointing her as his presidential counsellor if re-elected, calling Habba as deeply loyal and a relentless legal advocate.
